5 Minutes with The Wytches
You’re off on a headline UK tour with Japanese TV at the end of this month. What are you most looking forward to about it?
“I’ve recorded Japanese Television a load of times and I’m a big fan, but I’ve never seen them live. I’m excited that I’ll get to watch them every night. We have some new songs that we’ll be debuting too.”
Over the past decade, you’ve released an incredible catalogue of music. What are your top 3 favourite songs from your roster?
“I like the track ‘White Cliffs’ from our last album as it’s quite different to anything we’ve put out. There’s the song ‘Wide at Midnight’ which I’d still be happy with if I wrote it today (minus the lyrics). Then there’s the song ‘Meat Chuck’ which came together after I briefly got fed up of trying to write softer, more melodic songs. We came back to that eventually, but it felt good to work on something really disgusting sounding.”
Linking to our previous question, as a band, what is your favourite song to play live?
“My favourite song to play live is Gravedweller. It’s extremely simple to play, it’s like a nursery rhyme. Just a really intense nursery rhyme.”
Since coming together to form The Wytches, how have your tastes and motives changed as a group?
“I guess when we were in the early stages of the band, I hadn’t been writing songs for that long. Any music I was discovering and became inspired by, I’d try to incorporate it into the songs I was writing. Now I think the inspiration just seeps in naturally and there’s more of a method.”
2022 is beginning to draw to a close. What have been your highlights of this year?
“We played a couple festivals this year and played a couple gigs in Europe, which a couple years ago felt like something we wouldn’t really experience again.”
