Memory Of Speke are one of London’s most exciting bands on the live circuit! Ahead of their performance at ONLYBANDS we sit down with them for a “getting to know you” chat!

Hey Tegen (Memory Of Speke) Thank you for chatting to us today. Give us a brief history of Memory Of Speke, how did you all meet? Was there a defining event/moment that brought you together as a band?

“ We started on a whim and have just kept swimming. ”

Who do you consider as your main musical influences?

“David Byrne, The Slits, Frank Zappa, CAN. ”

Who do you think absolutely smashing it right now out on the live circuit?

“AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS — still ain’t seen them live but i watch a lot on YouTube and the fun they’re having is really delicious and i want some. I’d love to support them. Also their new album bangs.”

If you could pick one artist or band to feature on one of your songs, who would it be and why?

“Princess Nokia would be sick, every time she gets on a song she ends up being the best thing about it. I think she also has a really great approach to creating big bodies of work that feel just right - she’s not strict with style or staying in a lane, which I like.”

When it comes to composing/writing songs as a band, do you have a structured approach, or do you find that once you’re inspired you just start writing?

“All our songs start from improvisations, we tend to keep refining and redefining the songs every time we play, always micro editing, both in the performance and the music itself.”
