5 Minutes with Seraphina Simone
Firstly… congrats on your amazing EP ‘Milk Teeth’ that came out on July 22nd this year! How did it feel to release it?
“Quite surreal! I wrote these songs back in 2020 so I've been sitting with them a while, and it's a relief to let them go into the aether but it also feels strange. It has both a melancholy and euphoria to it, like the in-between feeling of finishing a chapter of a book before starting the next one. But I'm really proud of it so to have it finally out in the light and not tucked away feels really satisfying.”
Your song ‘Milk Teeth’ was added to the BBC 6 Music C List – how do you tend to discover new music and have you got any albums on repeat right now?
“I discover music in all kinds of ways - from films & tv shows, radio, Spotify algorithm, friend's recommendations, shazamming tunes in shops...
At the moment I'm loving the new MUNA and Harry Styles albums, Dijon's 'Absolutely', Beach House and Sinead O'Brien's most recent drops and a Prince album 'Piano & A Microphone 1983'. When I'm on the road I tend to put Bonny Light Horseman's self-titled album on whenever I need to chill or nap on the go.”
As an up-and-coming artist what do you want people to get from your music?
“To feel something, to be curious about it, for it to resonate in some way with something they're going through or have gone through. It's magical to me that someone can write a song about a specific situation in their life, and then as a listener you can hear it and feel like it's speaking directly to your own life experience.”
You directed your music video for ‘Lovesick’, how important is it to you have artistic control over that kind of output?
“I'm a control freak so, very, lol. It's never just about the music for me, there's a whole world to the project with aesthetic references and colour palettes and influences, and it's really important to me that this is all part of the output. The world can keep morphing and evolving, but there's a feeling I get, like a gut instinct, when it's right for the music, and that's what I always try to follow with all the visuals. I love graphic design and typography and cinematography, so being hands-on with the visuals for my project is a way to channel those interests and make sure everything feels integrated.”
How are you feeling in the run up to your show on September 28th? We can’t wait to see the EP performed live!
“It's crept up fast! Honestly, I've been so busy touring with Self Esteem as part of her touring band this summer that I haven't had much brain space to think ahead to September. But now it's round the corner I'm starting to get really excited and also kind of nervous, like when you get party fear. But getting a whole load of friends and strangers in a room and playing the EP with my amazing band and celebrating the release is going to be epic.”
